Need and Wants (cont)

Now, let’s define what a want and a need is.

Needs are important things in life that you need every day to survive. Some examples are:

  • Water
  • Shelter
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Education

A want is a desire for something which may not be necessary but may make your life easier or better. Some examples are:

  • Tickets to a sporting match, e.g. the Soccer Derby
  • Designer label/branded clothing e.g. Levi jeans or Polo shirts
  • A tablet or smartphone
  • Convenience foods

Sophie listened to what Themba said about needs and wants. She mentions that she spends a lot of money on convenience foods because she gets home late. Themba says that they will look at exactly what she spends when they do her budget, but she can probably plan a bit better and save that money.
